What Are The Basic Rules For The Maquerade?
When Is The Masquerade? Is There A Rehearsal, If So When? What Is The Maximum Act Length Of A Performance? Whats The Highest Rating Acceptable (PG - PG-13)? Is Explicit Or Graphic Lyrics/Content Allowed? Can We Preform Copywritten Material? Can A Performer Throw Candy Or Small Harmless Souvenirs Out Into The Audience During Their Performance? Is Any Specific Format Music Needs To Be In For Use In A Performance? What Are The Dimensions Of The Stage (For At Home Practice Purposes)?
Hmmm
It Seems The Song I Want To Perform, Despite Being On A CD, Isn't Copy Writen According To The US Copywite Office. I Guess That Makes Things A Bit Easier. I'll Be Sending You The Lyrics And An Outline Of How I Want To Perform It On Stage For Approval Later.
What About...
What If A Song Doesn't Have A Artist Associated With It, Such As Something From An Opera?
Basic Rules based on last posting
Okay, I'll answer them one by one.
When Is The Masquerade? Sunday Afternoon
Is There A Rehearsal, If So When? Yes, Sunday morning to about 1 if I remember right. Signuup is typically Friday night, but we take signups at the rehersal on Sunday as well.
What Is The Maximum Act Length Of A Performance? We've really never set a time limit, though 3 mins is pretty long unless you're able to keep the audiences attention for longer.. remember it seems most furs have the attention span of 1 minute or something :)
Whats The Highest Rating Acceptable (PG - PG-13)? We take PG-13 or safer.
Is Explicit Or Graphic Lyrics/Content Allowed? See above rating.
Can We Preform Copywritten Material? We go through the Hotel's licensing agreement with ASCAP/BMI So any music with those groups we can use.
Can A Performer Throw Candy Or Small Harmless Souvenirs Out Into The Audience During Their Performance? We would prefer no throwing objects. Handing out of objects.. that could be done.
Is Any Specific Format Music Needs To Be In For Use In A Performance? We would prefer already burned onto CD, that being the only song on the CD which probably won't be returned.
What Are The Dimensions Of The Stage (For At Home Practice Purposes)? If memory serves and what I can glean off of YouTube it's 16 foot wide, and 8 foot long with the 16 foot side facing the audience.
>Can We Preform Copywritten
"Can We Preform Copywritten Material? We go through the Hotel's licensing agreement with ASCAP/BMI So any music with those groups we can use."
How Would I Go About Finding This Out About The Song I Want To Preform?
What If The Song Is From A Musical And Doesn't Have A Single Group Or Artist Associated With It?
"Whats The Highest Rating Acceptable (PG - PG-13)? We take PG-13 or safer."
What About References To Imaginary Prescription Drugs Or Possibly Showing Prop Severed Body Parts/Internal Organs And/Or Small Amounts Of Fake Blood During A Performance?
More info/questions
Try the BMI website for an artist list to find music that is allowed for the Masqurade: http://bmi.com/affiliates/
I think gore (even if fake) isn't PG rated... :/
Now for more questions!
Will there be a dedicated light/sound guy or is it "Bring your own"?
If there are lighting options for the stage, what options are availiable? Filters, effects, presets, ect?
Who chooses the lineup order for the Masqurade? Is it first-come first serve, by voulenteer, or by percieved "skill" during rehersal? (ie: less skilled first so the more skilled don't make them look bad)
Are there any curtains, stairs, podiums, or non-mobile parts on the stage? Pictures/links could be helpful to give an idea of things.
Maybe some of these questions could be made into an FAQ for the main site? It could be helpful to lots of people.
Thanks!
better late than never
There is a dedicated sound guy, the lights are pretty much set to be on the whole time. It would be too hard to do the full filters and effects and such.
The order of the lineup is set first to make sure people in multiple acts are not right next to each other. I then work to see if I can get a flow between acts. Most of the time, they are just tossed where they will fit, unless there's specific guidelines written down. I am the one that chooses the lineup.
There are stairs, the green room is actually the headless lounge, you are then brought over to the ballroom and led in behind the puppet stage and then up the steps to the stage, we help get you up without falling. The stage itself is fully empty, with maybe a speaker on the far side, most of the time not. If you need tables or what not, you fill them out on the sheet you fill out. and they will be where you want them to be.
Hope this helps, I'll try to get at this more often now that I'm done with some pesky RL things
A Couple More For Now
If The Artist Isn't Associated With Either Of Those Organization Is There Any Other Way I Can Get Permission To Preform A Song, Such As Asking The Copywrite Holder Or Artist If I Can Use Thier Song For The Performance?
Also If There A Way To Get A Song Pre-Approved As Usable Before The Con Begins? (So I Don't Spend The Next Months Practicing Something That I Can Use)
Also Are There Any Rules About Doing Dramatic Readings Of Classic Literature As An Act?
If we have a notorized
If we have a notorized letter stating that you can use the song from the copywrite holder, then that would constitute permission.
Well, if you email me it off the list, the name and artist, I can certainly listen and let you know.
We've had things like that before, remember that we generally like 3 mins or less. Also remember that most furs have horrible attention span, so something needs to be happening fairly often. That's not to say they can't be done, but just to let you know a bit about what I've seen over my 12 years.
